Web Lookup

By Mikael Weiner

The Web Lookup plugin for Studio allows the user to select text in the source or target language of the translation and run an internet search by clicking on an icon in the ribbon, right-clicking in the editor and selecting "web lookup" or through the use of a simple keyboard shortcut. The search takes place in one of the 40 preconfigured websites... but that's not all! You can add your own websites to the menu or remove existing ones to configure the application the way you like. There is a useful guide that helps you to create the correct search URL and use it in the application. The search results themselves are language sensitive. For example, if you select a German source word then the results will be in a German website if available, and an English target language will result in a search result from an English website etc. The results are displayed in a window in Studio which can be placed wherever you like to make your personal use more convenient. Updates within V1.4 You can restrict the functionality of the browser so that images are not downloaded and scripts are not run. This done in Settings and will make things faster and more stable for some sites. You can share your own lookup methods with other Web Lookup users. This is also done in Settings – click Share in the dialog. Updates within V1.3 Opened tabs will be re-opened when Studio is re-started. Upon performing a lookup, the focus will move to the Web Lookup tabs for easy browsing among the open tabs using the arrow keys. When focus is in the web page, pressing Esc will move focus to the tabs and when focus is on the tabs, Esc will move focus to the translation segment. The standard autocomplete feature of Internet Explorer is now functional in Web Lookup, meaning that for example login details can be remembered.

The Problem

Transcreation isn't a process that obviously lends itself to a translation tool, mainly because of the creative nature of the text production in other languages to the source. Certainly terminology, concordance and other reference tools that may be available to you within a translation tool can help, but you're not going to get a lot of leverage in the way you would with a technical manual or source material like that. But in addition to the obvious linguistic challenges, the process of transcreation is something that also requires quite some administrative and disciplined management. You might have to take your source copy, provide multiple transcreations, into multiple languages, and then manage a back translation process too... finally pulling together a report that you can provide to your client with all of the transcreations, reasoning for the choice of words, back translations etc. and your recommendations for which transcreations should be used. Not insurmountable as we've doing this for decades... but still leaves room for improvement.

The Solution

The Trados Transcreate plugin for Trados Studio plays on the strengths of the project management side of a translation tool, or translation environment. It helps you to manage the overall process from receiving the original source copy and having to create the projects for each language with multiple source files for each alternative you've been asked for. It even supports a Microsoft Word workflow for when you are dealing with transcreationists who don't use a translation tool at all.

Trados TTS provides two new features for Trados Studio:

1. Text to Speech capability

2. Footpedal support

Text to Speech

Trados TTS (Text to Speech) is a plugin which allows you to listen to the audio of a segment (source or target) or to the entire file.

We use the Microsoft Azure Text to Speech solution which is available through their Cognitive Services to generate the audio file, and through this we offer many features:

- set a default to play source OR target

- use keyboard shortcuts to toggle between source/target

- use keyboard shortcuts for common requirements when using Text to Speech

- change the reading speed

- change the reading voice (based on what is offerred by Microsoft)

- map unsupported languages to be able to play any variant of a supported language

- control what's read when working with track changes

Footpedal Support

The plugin currently only supports footpedals using the USB HID driver supplied by VEC.

An example would be the Infinity USB Foot Pedal (IN-USB-2) which is easily obtained through Amazon for example. However, if you have a footpedal that supports programmable inputs then you could map it to the keyboard shorcuts in Studio.

The main actions provided by the supported footpedals are:

Right pedal - move to the next segment. If you hold the pedal down you will navigate through the segments automatically until you release the pedal.

Left pedal - move to the previous segment. If you hold the pedal down you will navigate through the segments automatically until you release the pedal.

Middle pedal - Play/ Pause the sound. To hear the audio playback press and hold the middle pedal. To pause the audio simply release the foot pedal.
